Workshop Overview:  How does problematic sexual behavior start? How do we identify it? And what do we do about it when it arises? This presentation will provide the learner with important research about normal sexual development across the lifespan and the ways in which problematic sexual development can occur. Attendees will learn how to determine when a sexual behavior becomes problematic, and strategies that can be implemented to protect both the community and the reputation of the patient. Topics will include pornography use and abuse, sexting, problematic sexual behaviors across the lifespan, and intervention strategies for preventing sexually problematic behavior across the lifespan. Gender/Sexuality/Cultural/Spiritual/Equity considerations as they relate to problematic sexual behavior and normal sexual development will also be discussed.

Learning Objectives:  By the end of this course, participants will have learned about:

  • Normal sexual development across the lifespan
  • How to identify when a sexual behavior becomes problematic through a developmental lens that also considers equity
  • How and why problematic sexual behavior develops
  • Problematic sexual behaviors
  • Pornography/Sexting use and misuse
  • Thoughtful interventions for helping people with problematic sexual behavior
