Meaningful Record Keeping: Considerations for Ethics, Insurance Requirements, and Peace of Mind

Presented by Maelisa McCaffrey, PsyD

DATE: Friday, September 27th, 2024

9:00 am until 4:00 pm PST

6 hours Continuing Education Credit

Location:  ONLINE via Zoom

(registrants will be sent a Zoom link via the email address they register with.  The Zoom link will be sent out 1-3 days prior to the training and will come from "COAP Workshops.")

This workshop will be capped at 95 participants

Workshop Overview:  Most mental health providers learn about documentation through trial and error in everyday practice. Requirements related to law and ethics are often unclear and those related to insurance seemingly shift without notice, which can lead to mistakes and overwhelm.

This workshop solves that problem by guiding you through the what, how and why of mental health documentation. Ethics, insurance requirements, and state laws will guide the foundation of this workshop but you will also gain practical skills you can implement immediately.

Come prepared to interact and realize that everyone else has the same embarrassing questions because this workshop is not just a lecture. You will practice writing notes alongside colleagues, evaluate real-life ethical conflicts, and leave with an actionable plan that instills confidence in your documentation.

Learning Objectives:  By the end of this training participants will be able to:

  • Define how HIPAA, OpenNotes, and other applicable laws and ethics apply to your individual documentation requirements.
  • Explain the three components of medical necessity for insurance documentation.
  • Identify the most common mistakes in mental health documentation.
  • Describe what components are necessary and helpful for a progress note template.
  • Explain two ways to save time on paperwork without negatively impacting clinical quality.
  • Describe how to document high risk issues, outside of session communication, and notes for special populations (couples, family, etc.).

About the Presenter: Dr. Maelisa McCaffrey is a licensed psychologist, nail design enthusiast, and multi-passionate entrepreneur. Through her business QA Prep, she empowers therapists with training and consultation on clinical documentation. Maelisa focuses on the “why” behind the usual recommendations and encourages clinicians to think outside the box, while also keeping their ethics intact. As someone with ADHD who’s had to figure out what works through trial and error, Maelisa aims to make sure her trainings are practical, while also allowing for plenty of laughter and fun.

Costs: COAP uses an online registration process that accepts credit and debit cards. The lowest registration rates are associated with early registration, we encourage you to sign up early to make sure you have a spot.  This workshop is limited to the first 95 participants who register.
