Workshop Overview:  Society is currently posed against a state of crisis in the form of loneliness. Research has consistently shown that social connection is one of the key protective factors in psychological and physical health and longevity, yet individuals are reporting record levels of disconnection. The current landscape of a post-COVID world and a tech-heavy environment presents both challenges and opportunities for increased social connection, which could dramatically impact individuals’ wellness and functional success. This CE event will explore loneliness as a current crisis along with several theoretical and conceptual concepts that impact loneliness and friendship-making behaviors, along with practical approaches to increase social connection through a values-based lens. The event will include both seminar and interactive components to share information as well as integrate it into tangible approaches.

Learning Objectives: By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Present the current state of loneliness and friendship as it applies to children, adolescents, and adults.
  • Discuss how personality types and interpersonal styles (e.g., introversion, extroversion, etc.) impact social relationships and social engagement.
  • Exploring introduction of attachment theory and how it impacts social engagement in friendships and loneliness.
  • Discuss how top psychopathologies impact social engagement.
  • Explore how values work and motivational interviewing can support loneliness and friendship.
  • Encourage attendees to consider different tools and approaches to utilize with their clients in supporting social engagement.
