Our intention is for this workshop to ta ke place in person, but it may be changed to an online format if not safe f or groups to meet in person due to COVID-19. Workshop Overview: < /strong>Suicide is a leading cause of death in the United States with over 45,000 deaths in 2020. In the same time period an estimated 12.2 million Am erican adults seriously thought about suicide, 3.2 million planned a suicid e attempt, and 1.2 million attempted suicide.
Engagin g in ethical practice requires core competency in awareness and understandi ng of suicide as well as essential clinical skills to address it.
In this training, we will look at suicide through the lens of our cultural experiences, values, biases, and attitudes. We will consider s uicide care as a social justice issue through a diversity, equity, and incl usion lens(DEI).
Our focus will be to understand the importance of relationally mindful and client-specific assessment. We will explore the components of collaborative and compassionate safety planning w ith attention to the imperative of creating safety with lethal means. We wi ll describe evidence-based approaches to treatment interventions and manage ment.
To enhance the accessibility of care, a panel o f community partners will offer a myriad of resources for a suicide-safer c ommunity.

About th e Presenter: Cheryl Emerson is a Licensed Professional Counselor ( LPC) in private practice in Bend, Oregon. She specializes in trauma-informe d therapy and offers counseling to adults, couples, and families presenting with a wide variety of concerns. Cheryl holds a Master of Science (MS) in Clinical Mental Health and is a Board Certified Counselor through the Natio nal Board of Certified Counselors (NBCC).
Central Ore gon has been home for Ms. Emerson and her family for nearly three decades. During that time she has been active in and passionate about suicide preven tion efforts and advocacy. She has trained and collaborated with local, reg ional, and statewide groups, agencies, and organizations. She speaks at con ferences and offers consultation to various organizations, colleagues, and community members in suicide prevention, intervention and postvention, and other forms of ‘sudden death.
In addition to her coun seling practice, Ms. Emerson has been an Adjunct Instructor in the Masters in Counseling program at Oregon State University-Cascades (OSU-Cascades). S he is a certified trainer in the suicide prevention model Question-Persuade -Refer (QPR), a Master trainer in the suicide intervention model Applied Su icide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST), certified to deliver the associ ated ASIST TuneUp program, and a certified suicide postvention trainer in C ONNECT. She has served on a variety of Advisory Councils including the Lead ership Team of the Central Oregon Suicide Prevention Alliance (COSPA) and t he affiliated Primary Care and Community Outreach workgroups. She has consu lted in primary care workflows and lethal means protocols. She also served on the OSU-Cascades Health and Wellness Advisory Council. She currently ser ves on the Central Oregon EMDR Therapist Network Steering Committee.
Costs: COAP uses an online registration pr ocess that accepts credit and debit cards. The lowest registration rates ar e associated with early registration, we encourage you to sign up early to make sure you have a spot. This workshop is limited to the first 80 partici pants who register.
The following fee structure is se t to be equivalent to a virtual workshop, so if we need to host the worksho p virtually no refunds will be issued for payments already collected. If th e training takes place in-person, COAP will offset the extra fees as a cour tesy to participants.
