Workshop Overview:  The "Big C" typically rocks the world of cancer patients and their loved ones. Often creating such alarming distress, worry, trepidation, and uncertainty and being thrown into a foreign and uncharted world of oncology. Many are confronted by their mortality and life being shortened. Survivors face lingering side effects, often changes in their bodies, and fears of reoccurrence. Cancer patients can feel alone and without a place to process the magnitude of feelings and emotions. The American Cancer Society reports that one out of every three people in the United States is affected by cancer. More than 1.7 million people are diagnosed with cancer each year in the United States, and 600,000 die annually from it, according to the CDC. As stated by Caruso and Breitbart in 2020, augmenting standard care with psychosocial cancer care reduces distress, improves the quality of life during and after active treatment, and increases survival rates.

Attendees will learn about various aspects of a cancer journey in this workshop, from cancer diagnosis and cancer treatment protocols, side effects, body changes, financial and occupational challenges, relationships impacted, and other complex layers of cancer. The words of oncology patients and their loved ones will be interwoven into the workshop to provide a unique frame of reference. Additionally, psychotherapy treatment tools will be accented to provide skills to effectively support and aid clients with their multitude of reactions and challenges, discuss mortality and preparedness for it, cope with the psychological turmoil and trauma of cancer, and self-care of the clinician. Resources for cancer patients and their families will be provided for referral purposes. A panel of specialists will be interviewed during this workshop to provide unique perspectives of their care in the field of oncology, including a naturopathic oncologist (Katherine Neubuaer, N.D., FABNO at Cascade Cancer Center), oncologist (Andrew Chen, DO at Summit Medical Group Oncology), physical therapist (Melissa Carlton PT, at Lymphedema & Oncology Rehab Program at Rebound Physical Therapy), acupuncturist (Kym Garrett, L.Ac. in private practice), and oncology nurse (Susan Long, RN at St. Charles Medical Center).

Learning Objectives:  By the end of this course, participants will:

  •  Improve understanding of the complex aspects of cancer in a client's life.
  • Increase knowledge of unique perspectives and experiences of cancer from differing care providers in the oncology field.
  • Improve how to effectively be present and available for cancer patients and their loved ones.
  • Enhance learning of treatment tools to aid clients with cancer's psychological turmoil and trauma.
  • Expand insight into various resources for cancer patients.
  • Be able to implement meaningful ways to self-care while supporting cancer patients and their loved ones.

About the Presenter:  Stephanie S. Russell, Psy.D. is a licensed psychologist in private practice in Bend, Oregon. In the midst of a busy private practice and personal life, Dr. Russell was diagnosed with a rare, aggressive, and advanced lymphoma. Her cancer journey prompted a desire to be a resource for cancer patients and their loved ones. Dr. Russell elected to invest in learning more about the field of oncology through various readings and training. Upon returning to her private practice after her medical leave in 2020, Dr. Russell devoted a portion of her practice to oncology patients and loved ones. She has found immense purpose and meaning in supporting cancer patients through their cancer journey. Dr. Russell also has special interests in sexual issues, stress, life transitions, chronic illness, depression, and anxiety with teenage and adult individual clients.

Dr. Russell has been in private practice since 2001 in Bend, Oregon. She attended California School of Professional Psychology in San Diego for her Doctoral of Psychology degree, Boston College for her Masters in Counseling Psychology, and Willamette University for her Bachelors in Science degree with psychology as her major. Dr. Russell completed her post-doctoral internship in Bend, Oregon, under the supervision of two licensed psychologists. Dr. Russell was a founding officer for the Central Oregon Association of Psychologists (COAP) in 2003. She has served on the board as the treasurer since its inception. In 2021, COAP created a scholarship committee to supply financial support for Central Oregon Outstanding High School Seniors, to which Dr. Russell serves as the committee chair.
